Studio Lime delivered a full redesign of Henley Bank High School’s leisure facilities for the Greenshaw Learning Trust working in partnership with Halo Leisure.
Studio Lime were appointed to provide full architectural services from concept to completion for the refurbishment of leisure facilities for the Greenshaw Learning Trust at Henley Bank High School. The Greenshaw Learning Trust partnered with Halo Leisure, a not-for-profit organisation dedicated to providing accessible community fitness spaces. The partnership looked to make use of existing underused amenities at the school by extending their use to the local community.
The existing building included a swimming pool with changing facilities, a separate gym and dance studio, and a multiuse sports hall that was outside of the scope of works. The individual smaller spaces were reimagined into a single large modern fitness suite, and the wet changing room facilities were stripped back to brick and fully refurbished.
The redesigned gym allowed for all equipment to be housed in a single space and split into focussed workout zones. Floor finishes were selected to suit the different workout areas, including specialist rubber flooring for weight training and different coloured flooring to demarcate workout areas from general circulation. The pitched roof was exposed internally by removing the ceiling tiles to create a sense of openness. A combination of acoustic ceiling and wall panels were used to manage sound and the feature band around the walls at high level provides visual interest.
The existing wet changing room facilities were outdated and difficult to manage for the school environment, with separate male and female changing rooms. The facilities were completely transformed into a modern unisex changing village with private changing cubicles and upgraded male, female and accessible toilets. The layout was designed to provide multiple access points to the swimming pool to reduce pinch points at busy times.
