Studio Lime delivered executive architectural services for the refurbishment of Cricklade Leisure Centre, transforming outdated facilities to improve accessibility and modernise and expand the centre's offerings to the local community.
Studio Lime were appointed to deliver executive architectural services for the detailed technical design and construction stages for the internal remodelling and refurbishment of Cricklade Leisure Centre, located north of Swindon.
The project aims were responding to a clear issue with the exising facilties, which no longer reflected how people engage with leisure and fitness today. Underused squash courts, cramped wet changing areas and poor accessibility were limiting the centre’s potential. The proposals looked to make interventions within the existing building footprint to extend the centre’s offering to the local community.
The works included a full refurbishment of the swimming pool and associated plant, with a new plant room constructed on the rear of the building to serve the heating and ventilation requirements of the swimming pool. The wet changing rooms, were stipped back to brick and extended into one of the adjacent squash courts, allowing for a complete redesign. The new facilities now include individual showers, improved toilet provision, dedicated family changing rooms, and vanity areas, creating a more welcoming and user friendly experience.
The second squash court was transformed into a spacious, multi-purpose studio by combining it with adjacent store rooms. Fitted with specialist sprung flooring, the studio is suitable for a wide range of activities, including a variety of fitness and dance classes. At first floor, the infilled squash courts provided valuable additional floor area, enabling an extension to the existing gym and the creation of a flexible meeting room available for hire by the community.
One of the overarching aims of the project was to improve accesibility throughout the leisure centre. A new assisted changing room and WC were introduced, offering direct access from reception to the poolside, complete with a poolside hoist. A platform lift was also installed, ensuring that visiotors can access all the facilities on offer with ease.
